MODERN STOCK BREEDING

AN EXPERT’S ADVICE

EVOLVE A “BUSINESS” SHEEP. LONDON, June 30. A striking address advocating a “ revolution ” in stock breeding was delivered at the agricultural organisers’ conference at Cambridge by Sir Daniel Hall, director of the John Innes Horticultural Institution and scientific adviser to the Ministry of Agriculture. Sir Daniel Hall said the day for “ worship ” of pedigree stock had gone—it was a dangerous will o’ the wisp to dangle before the farmer. Instead of segregating the breeds, the farmer should be evolving a "business sheep.” Instead of “fancy” animals we wanted synthetic breeds of sheep, pigs and cattle, which would turn to the maximum profit the conditions under which we were working. Pastoralists must learn to farm the grass—‘■not leave the grass to an act of God.
