To mark the retirement of Mr b. A. Gillman from the ranks of the H.B. organisation, the directors and staff of that company gathered together in the “0.K.” Cafe on Tuesday evening last to celebrate the occasion. The chairman (Mr W. Fels, managing director of Hallenatein Bros., Ltd.) referred to the very fine feeling which had always existed between Mr Gillman and the company, and, in wishing Mr Gillman many years to enjoy his well-earned retirement, asked him, on behalf of the directors, to accept a cheque. Mr L. Boyd, speaking on behalf of the staff, emphasised the high esteem in which Mr Gillman was held by his co-workers, on whose behalf be presented him with a set of volumes. Representatives of the various sections of the company spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Gillman s career with the “H. 8.,” and a very pleasant evening, interspersed with items and supper, was brought to a close with the smging of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow and “Auld Lang Syne.” Mr C. J. Playno, who has been appointed controller of the estates division in the head office of the Public Trust Office, is a member of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and of the Incorporated Institute of Accountants. He was educated at Newtown School, Wellington, and Wellington College. He joined the Public Trust Office in 1908, and during his service has held numerous positions on the accounting and administration Bides at head office and branches., Prior to his appointment to head office in 1925 he was district accountant at Christchurch and later was assistant district Public Trustee there. In 1027 Mr Playne visited Tonga, where he carried out important work for the Public Trustee in connection with the organisation of the copra interests held -by the office. His visit was productive of' very beneficial results, and the business in hand was brought to a successful issue. Later in the same year hie services were placed by the Public Trustee at the disposal of the Government of Tasmania for the purpose of making an investigation of the system and methods of the Tasmanian Public Trust Office, to ascertain whether any reorganisation or improvements were considered necessary for the better working of that office. The result of his work in this connection was highly commended by the Premier of Tasmania, Mr J. A. Lyons, later Treasurer of the Commonwealth.
