ANDORRA SWEEPSTAKE
REFUND OF DEPOSIT SOUGHT » PARIS, July 1. Owing to the refusal of the joint suzerains of the small republic of Andorra, between France and Spain, to allow a sweepstake to be conducted in the republic, the Australian syndicate, known as Broom’s, now established at Danzig, has applied for the return of its deposit of £3OOO. The Andorran General Council has replied that as the suzerains, and not the council, disallowed the sweepstake, there is theoretically nothing to prevent the syndicate from operating in Andorra, which has earmarked the .deposit for the establishment of a police force of six men and the building of a small hospital.
What was virtually a declaration of independence was issued in March bv Andorra, which is under the joint suzerainty of the Spanish Bishop of Urgel and the President of the French Republic The manifesto asked what right had the Bishop of Urgel and President Doumergue to interfere in the domestic affairs of Andorra by attempting to dis allow the arrangement made by the council of the republic with an Australian syndicate to conduct a sweepstake from there. The manifesto demanded that President Doumergue and the bishop should confer with the people to discuss their rights.
