RELIEI OF DISTRESS WORK AT THE DEPOTS ST. ANDREW STREET DEPOT Coal is still one of the principal requirements at the St. Andrew street food depot. The following donations are acknowledged with thanks: —Women’s Division Farmers’ Union, Berwick (groceries), Laureuson’s (bread), Mr Miller, East Taieri, (case apples), "Caversham” (jam and sauce), Mrs Orbell (sack potatoes), Mrs Roberts (oatmeal), Mrs Lambeth (Hour and oatmeal), Mrs Smith (candles, weekly donation), Mrs M'Kellar (groceries), Mrs G. G. (sack potatoes), Maori Hill Ladies’ Association (groceries), Captain Beaumont (ton coal), Mr J. M'lndoe (six sacks potatoes), Mr F. R. Capon (two sacks potatoes), Mrs Nelson (sack potatoes), Mr Robertson, Caversham (meat), Mr A. Hutton (free cartage), Mr T, D. Jamieson (meat), A. Bolwell (meat), 80l well’s employees (meat), P.S.SA. (hares), Stewart’s (case fish), Mrs H. Hart (honey, weekly donation), Mrs Armstrong (butter), Mrs R. Hudson (ton coal), Mr Bard well (meat), Mr Lister (meat), A. Free (20 bags swedes). DOWLING STREET DEPOT A particularly busy day was experienced yesterday by the workers in the Dowling street clothing depot, the work of investigation and the distribution of clothing, bedding, and footwear continuing until a late hour in the afternoon. The boot repairing department is still working at high pressure, and sole leather is urgently required. The following donations are acknowledged with thanks: —Miss Woods, Mr Bressey (clothing), Mr Kimpshell (clothing and shoes), Mrs F. G. Duncan (clothing and shoes), M'Glashan College (mattresses). STREET COLLECTION The efforts of the Otago University street collectors on Wednesday resulted in about £123 being added to the funds to be used in the relief of distress. This achievement by the students will bo much appreciate not only hy those who will gain direct benefit, but also by the community as a whole. “POUND A WEEK” SCHEME A very enthusiastic meeting of the Mornington Committee was held in the Scout Hall on Wednesday evening in connection with the “ pound a week ” scheme. Lists handed in by the members of the committee, who had undertaken to canvass the district, contained the names af about 300 people who are willing to contribute a pound of some commodity weekly to the Mayor’s depot, such goods to be collected by the Scouts each week.
Further lists have yet to come in, and it is anticipated these will contain another 100 names. In addition about 60 people have undertaken to send their contributions direct to the various local receiving depots. It is anticipated, therefore, that Mornington residents under this scheme will contribute about 450 pounds of groceries weekly to the relief depot.
The following local receiving depots have been arranged:—Mr Landin’s shop, Elgin road; Mr Woods’s shop, Elgin road; Mr Shirley’s shop, Kenmure road; Mrs Hall’s shop, Lawrance street; Mr Rutherford’s shop, Mailer street; Mr Hook’s shop, Meadow street; Mrs Weir’s shop, Maryhill terrace; Mr Davey's shop, Glen road; Mr M'Goun’s shop, Glen road; Mrs Wing’s residence, Preston crescent; School Gymnasium. Further local depots are being arranged. Members of the committee reported several cases of hardship, which have been recommended to the St, Andrew street depot for relief. Several deserving cases have already been helped with food, clothing, coal and blankets, and in this connection it was reported that Mrs S. Solomon and Mr D. A. Solomon had contributed coal, groceries, blankets and clothing for distribution among necessitous cases in the Mornington district, which help was much appreciated. The Scouts will make the first collection of goods to-morrow morning, and the committee desires to thank all those residents who are so generously responding to this appeal. The next meeting of the committee will be held at 8 p.m. on Monday evening, July 27, at the Scout Hall, Mornington. WELLINGTON TO RAISE LOAN (Pun United Press Association. i WELLINGTON, July IC. The City Council has decided to raise a loan of £IO,OOO to be expended only in supervision, materials, and insurances in connection with works under the No. 5 scheme.
