CANADA AND AUSTRALIA
NEW TRADE AGREEMENT BENEFITS WIDELY DISTRIBUTED (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) OTTAWA, July 13. (Received July 14, at 7 p.m.) The Prime Minister (Mr Bennett) tabled the new Canadian-Australian trade agreement in the House of Commons to-night. He announced that the great bulk of commodities exported from Canada were guaranteed by a substantial preference in Australia. In return Canada will accord Australia its British preferential tariff and reduced rates on 28 items of Canadian tariff. Mr Bennett said: "Throughout the negotiations, which have now culminated in the conclusion of a Board of Trade agreement, we have sought to adhere to the princple of diverting to-each other trade which at present is being done with countries outside the Empire. I sincerely hope and trust that the agreement will bear the fruit which we so earnestly desire.” The Minister of Trade and Commerce (Mr Stevens), commenting on the treaty, said: “The whole of Canada will share in the benefit. The Pacific Coast will get a special advantage in lumber, paper, and fish trade. Under the blanket of a concession of British preferential tariff manufacturers of miscellaneous goods all over Canada will benefit”
PREFERENCE TO AUSTRALIAN BUTTER.
CANBERRA, July 14 (Received July'ls, at 0.5 a.m.)
The Minister of Markets (Mr P. J. Moloney) has tabled the reciprocal trade treaty between Canada and Australia. Certain Australian goods are to be admitted into Canada at rates lower than the British preferential tariff covering fresh and canned meats, eggs, dairy produce, hops, rice, fruits, and wines. Australian butter is to be admitted into Canada at 14s per cwt lower than New Zealand.
