PALMERSTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.} PALMERSTON, July 14. PALMERSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Hopkins) and Crs M'Gregor Gordon, Riddle, Earley, Thomas, Warren, Haggle, Thomson, and Morrison.

The foreman of works reported that the main creek from the town had been finished. One pang of men was now on the creek from O’Fee’s to Gilligan street; another was forming a side road to Warren’s, and another was putting in pipes across Runbrake street by Burrow’s. Dur-. ing the snowy weather gravel was put on the Pound road, Sandy, Young, and Start streets, on the boundary road to the slaughter yards, and on some of the footpaths. Mrs T. Collins was granted permission to crept two rooms where her house was recently burnt. The secretary of the local Plunket Society applied for a picture some time during the winter to raise funds. —A discussion took place, councillors generally not being in favour of granting any more pictures for benefits.—lt was eventually decided that the Picture Committee bring in a report to the next meeting on the matter. —An application from a local young woman to sell home-made sweets at the pictures was treated similarly. The health officer was thanked for his report on the analysis of the town drinking water, which was stated to be good. The Otago Electric Power Board forwarded particulars of its charges for the town .lights, and also rates for the year ending March 31,'. 1932.—Received. The town clerk, Dunedin, wrote suggesting that the Borough Council collect heavy traffic licenses in future.—Received.

The Main Highways Board drew attention to straying cattle on the main highways, and enclosed a copy of by-laws.— Communication to he handed to the borough ranger. A circular complaining of the working of the unemployment funds was received from the New Zealand Farmers’ Union.— Received.

The Gaelic Society of New Zealand wrote thanking the council for assistance given during the recent unveiling of the M‘Keuzie Memorial.—Received.

Accounts amounting to £974 8s were passed for payment. Notice was given to strike the same rates of those of last year. The Water Committee was empowered to have water pipes that were frozen for several days put deeper into the ground.
