SOUTH OTAGO

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, July 12. SCHOOL SPORTS. A field day, under the auspices of the South Otago Primary Schools’ Sports Association (Mr G. H. Mitchell president), was held yesterday on the sports ground and the school playground. Those who attended enjoyed numerous keenlycontested and spirited games. Three competitions were held—basket ball (six teams), hockey (two), and football (six teams). The standard of play in the basket ball was particularly high, and reflected great credit on the various coaches responsible. The results were as follow: — Basket Ball. —Balclutha 5, Clinton 1; Stirling 10, Tuapeka 1; Kaitangata C, Milton 1; Balclutha 8, Stirling 1; Tuapeka 6, Milton 1; Clinton 3> Kaitangata 2. Semi-final. —Balclutha 9, Tuapeka 0; Kaitangata 3, Stirling 1. Final. —Balclutha 10, Kaitangata 2. The winners, who played excellent basket ball throughout the day, showed skill in passing and handling, and used their height to advantage. Hockey.—Milton 1, Kaitangata 1; final: Milton 5, Kaitangata 1. Football. —First round: Clinton 6, Bal clutha 3; Kaitangata 37, Stirling-Ben-har nil. Second round: Milton 12, Clinton 'nil. Final: Milton 5, Kaitangata nil. In the final the play was mostly confined to the forwards, where Milton had a distinct advantage in weight, and more thrust, which were the deciding factors. v The object of these field days is to save parents the expense involved in holding weekly competitions. It is intended to hold another field day later in the season. RUGBY FOOTBALL. Saturday’s games resulted as follow: Clutha 9, Star C; Owaka 3, Clinton nil; Toko B 14, Crescent nil. Juniors— High School 35, Clutha Juniors 3; Crescent 17, Toko nil. Clinton up till Saturday had an unbeaten record, and was 14 points up for the banner, with Owaka 7 points. The position now is: Clinton 14 points, Toko A 12, Clutha 11, Owaka 9, with Clinton and Owaka one match more to play than the others. SUB-UNION AFFAIRS. A meeting of the Management Committee of the South Otago Sub-union was held on Saturday night, when Mr E. Moore presided over a good attendance. The president referred to the bereavement suffered by Mr Hay in the death of his brother, Mr W. G. Hay, and a motion of sympathy was carried by the members standing in silence. The secretary of the Otago Union notified that no Otago team could be sent to South Otago this season. ' , • Clearances were approved as follow: —L. Milne, Pirates to Clinton; Tinsley Wilson, Clutha to Star. Accounts amounting to £5 3s were passed for payment. Referees for Saturday’s junior matches were appointed as follow:—High School v. Crescent, at Kaitangata (Mr Lennox) ; Clutha v. Toko, at Milton (Mr Wightman).

The following team has been selected to represent South Otago in the annual match against Western Districts at Heriot on Saturday next:—Full-back, J. Roy (Clinton); three-quarters—J. Sewell (Clutha), H. Jackman (Owaka), cap tain, L. Graham (Clutha); five-eighths— G. Barron (Star), J. Crook (Crescent) ; half, Woodhead (Toko) ; hookers, A. Hansen (Toko) T. Hughes (Crescent) ; lock, A. Orr (Clinton) ; supports, K. MTntosh (Clutha) E. Richardson (Star); back row, Garden (Clinton) M'Laren (Owaka); wing-forward, H. Hahn (Owaka) ; emergencies—Back: A. Stewart (Toko); forwards: W. Hughes (Crescent), B. Harraway (Star). Mr E. Moore was appointed manager of the South Otago team to visit Heriot on Saturday, July 18.
