GIRL'S BODY FOUND
DEEPLY BURIED IN SPOIL POLICE ACT ON SLENDER CLUE (Peb United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 12. After digging operations had been carried ’on since Wednesday, a body, believed to be that of Phyllis Ava Symons, , aged 17, who has been missing for more than a fortnight, was recovered this afternoon buried in spoil dumped from the new tunnel near Kilbirnie. The police, acting on conclusions arrived at by chance remarks which came to their ears on Wednesday, began to investigate the area where a considerable depth of spoil has already been placed for the purpose of making a new park. Had a clue not been obtained the body, which was then at a depth of several feet, would have been buried beneath many feet of soil. The digging was carried on for threedays by a gang of 80 unemployed men, aided by a mechanical navvy. Large crowds of morbid-minded spectators at different times watched the digging operations, and the news spread quickly when the body was discovered. While the police awaited the arrival of a pathologist and a van, the crowd increased to about 600, standing on adjoining fences and points of advantage. A post-mortem examination will be held to-morrow, and till then no *i.arge will be preferred.
