Ministerial. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr P. A. de la Perrelle), who attended the unveiling ceremony at the memorial cairn erected to the memory of Sir John M'Kenzie at Palmerston, returned to Wellington last evening. Archdeacon Taylor was a passenger by the express to Christchurch yesterday. Mr E. H. Lough travelled north by the express yesterday. Mr C. Sykes, of Middlemarch, spent the week-end in Dunedin. A Press Association telegram from Ashburton states that Sir William Nosworthy has announced that he will not be a candidate at the forthcoming general election. \ Mr H, K, Banks, of Calcutta, arrived from the north last night, and will leave for Invercargill this morning. He will return to Dunedin this evening. We have been asked to contradict a rumour that Mr L. H. Frude, a director of the Goldberg Advertising Agency, Ltd., has associated himself with another advertising agency. He will continue to control his company’s affairs in Otago and Southland. Mr George Bruce Smith, of - Sydney, general manager of the Australian Provincial Assurance Association, Ltd., and Mr A. W. Milburn, South Island manager, arrived from the north last night, and will leave for Invercargill this morning. They will return to Dunedin by car to-night. The term of appointment of Messrs V. H. Reed, of Auckland, and A. S. Malcolm, of South Otago, as Legislative Councillors, will expire to-day. The Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) stated yesterday that the vacancies would not be filled, adding that this was in pursuance of the policy of economy announced previously. The Commissioner of Police (Mr W G. Wohlmann) has granted records of merit (reports our special correspondent in Wellington) to Constable W, S. Hammond, of Taranaki Street Station, for a gallant attempt to save the lives of members of the crew of the steamer Progress which was wrecked on the coast at Ohiro Bay on May 1, and Constable Baker, of Island Bay, for gallantly saving the life of a member of the crew of the Progress.
