It is commonly believed that the invasion of the automobile has almost exterminated horse traffic. This is, however, by no means so in Germany; rather the contrary is the fact, according to the report issued upon its twenty-fifth anniversary by the Union for the Protection of Horses Throughout Germany. Authentic figures for 1930 show that at present there are 3,519,000 horses in Germany, compared with 3,'806, 1 705 before the wa f . This must be considered an increase rather than a decrease when it is remembered that Germany has grown smaller, and also that cavalry horses are no longer to any extent in use. Motor transport does not everywhere supersede horse transport. Some 2000 horses are at work in the coal mines, and the strenuous times in agriculture have caused many farmers to fall back upon horses for field work as being cheaper than motor transport. So that it should not be crowded out by its own seedlings, the creosote bush of America drops its seeds and then spreads a poison on them that slows up germination.
