UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD’S . SCHEME GOVERNMENT AND MANUFACTURERS TO CO-OPERATE. Particulars, of a scheme which the Unemployment Board has evolved, having as its purpose the increasing of employment by the stimulation of - the purchase of New Zealand-made goods, were received at the meeting of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association last night. The secretary of the-New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation forwarded a copy of a letter •which had been relieved from Mr G. W. Clinkard, the secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce. The letter stated that the Unemployment Board had placid' before the Prime Minister certain proposals which had for. their object the stimulation of -sales of New Zealand products. The' scheme divided itself into three proposals, which iVrere as follows: : 1. The Prime Minister to issue definite instructions to Government departinents to purchase wherever possible New' ' Zealand-made , goods for departmental ■ use. - 2. That the Government should embark on a newspaper campaign for a period of - three months to arouse public interest 'ip the use and consumption of New Zea-lind-made goods. 3. A conference of representative retailers with the Prime: Minister regarding the assistance they can render by stocking and advocating the sale of New Zealand-made goods. ' It was hoped, the letter continued, that instructions to Government departments to give definite preference to New Zea-land-made goods would be issued shortly by the Prime Minister. In regard to the second proposal, the board had recommended and the Minister of Finance had approved of-the expenditure of £BOO by the board provided that the manufac-, turers also contributed £4OO, making £I2OO available for advertising propaganda purposes. A conference of the president of the associations with, the department to discuss details was recommended. The association agreed to contribute ' £IOO towards the cost of the scheme, the secretary reporting that both the Auckland and Wellington associations had passed similar resolutions.
