FIRES

OUTBREAK IN WELLINGTON DENSE VOLUMES OF SMOKE. (Pee Gnited Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 9. An outbreak of fire in the Dominion Confectionery Company’s premises in Tory street last evening was accompanied by such , thick, pungent smoke that the firemen were forced to use masks to attack the seat of the blaze. The fire started in the loft of the three-storey building, where a quantity of sacks and coke was stored, and these were burning when the brigade arrived. The outbreak, however, was quickly suppressed, once the brigade were able to get at the seat of the trouble, with little damage to the building.

A LOCAL CALL. The City Fire Brigade received a call at 2.39 p.m. yesterday to Messrs Sutherland and Balone’s joinery factory at the corner of Bowen street and Royal crescent, Musselburgh, where fire had broken out in the rear of the premises. The outbreak proved to be only a slight one, and very little damage was done.
