DEBATING

UNIVERSITY COMMERCE SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the University Commerce Debating Society was held at the University last Thursday. The vicepresident outlined the advantages of a knowledge of public speaking to commerce students who would some day be business men. A very satisfactory report was read, Messrs E. J. Thomson and R- Hanan having gained trophies for being the best speakers of the year. Debates had been held with the Law Debatiug_ Society, St. Andrew’s University Debating Society, and a very successful debate with the Christchurch Commerce Debating Society. The new office-bearers elected were as follow: —President, Mr E. J. Thomson; vice-president, Mr R. Guthrie; secretary, Mr S. Gilkison; committee —Messrs West and Douglas and Miss Coombs.
