NORTHERN v. THISTLE. A match between Northern (Dunedin) and Thistle (Christchurch) was played at English Park, Christchurch, at Easter. Shortly after the commencement of the game Smith (Northern) scored twice in brilliant fashion, the first with a beautiful header from a long pass from the left. Northern 2 goals, Thistle nil. The homo team then assailed the visitors’ goal unsuccessfully on several occasions, the stubborn defence of the Northern backs proving too good. The score was unchanged when half-time came. After some back and forward play Trotter (Thistle) found the net well up, making the score: Northern 2 goals, Thistle 1 goal. Thistle then attacked for a long time, brilliant play by Smith saving the goal on one occasion, and after both sets of forwards had made combined efforts to roach the other’s goal the game ended with the scores: Northern 2 goals Thistle .. .. .. .. 1 goal Mr H. Weatherhead was the referee.
