No country makes its citizens go to so much trouble to pay their taxes as Italy. While most of the individual taxes are small, the global amount is very large, and the burden of paying them is far greater than if the levy was exacted in a few stiff sums. It would be impossible to compile a full list of the taxes levied in Italy either by the State or by the communes. Some time ago a Genoese newspaper in advocating a form of taxation in Italy mentioned some of the taxes which a bachelor business man had to pay. These taxes — though the following is not necessarily a complete list —include national land tax. provincial land tax, communal land tax, gross income tax with supplementary taxes on portions of income derived from business, bachelor tax, supertax on both income and wealth, communal tax on business, communal tax' on profession, and corporation tax for Fascist corporations. There are also social insurance tax, highway maintenance tax (one for home and one for business), highway occupation tax, sign tax, tax for provincial council’s economy, tax on rent paid, licence for conduct of any kind of business, trade, or profession; tax for each vehicle owned, tax for each animal owned, aqueduct tax, tax on pianos, and tax on servants.
