There is a little village named Burg dorp in Northern Idaho too small to be found in even large atlases. A doctor’s fine work has put it on the map. To Burgdorp a mountaineer dragged himself in spite of a feeling of deadly sickness and pain. A snow blizzard was raging. The nearest doctor was 50 miles away. But there was a telephone, and when Dr Numbers—for that was his unusual name—heard the call he went through the, blizzard, and arrived, just in time. He had no one to help him. It was below freezing p int in the cabin, and there was little light outside, but in spite of all, he operated for appendicitis, and saved the life of the mountaineer.
Several regiments have their gallant deeds commemorated by peculiarities of uniform. The Scots Greys and First Eoyal Dragoons have on their collars an eagle in commemoration of Waterloo, where both regiments captured French eagles. The drummers of the Border Eegiment have the Eoyal Arms worked in the lace of their tunics, a souvenir of gallantry at Fontenoy. The officers of the Somerset Light Infantry wear the sash-knots on the right side in memory of the regiment’s heroic action at Culloden.
