COURSING NOTES

• By Clarence. The running of the Stewart Cup at Balclutha last week was responsible for much interest locally, and the club was given a good start. Coursing in the Clutha district promises to provide good sport during the season. The winner of the stake (Grand Jewel) was recently purchased by Mr M. Low from a Dunedin sportsman, and the winner is a greatlyimproved animal since changing hands. He is by the speedy Grand Slam ex Gipsy Gem, the latter being a Taranaki-bred slut by Mons ex Silent Wave, The runner-up, Gay Jim, hails from the Taieri, being by Mr P. Tracey’s dog, Digger, from Lou. Gay Jim has started twice, and on both occasions he has been runner-up. He is owned by the secretary of the South Otago Open Club (Mr Robertson), and is a useful hound and a great fencer. After a lapse of 15 years, Greymouth has revived its club, and has an excellent enclosure, which will add interest to the game on the West Coast. Three promising dogs bred by Mr V. Jackson, of Invercargill, have been sold at satisfactory figures to Greymoutli owners. Donutia, an imported English bitch, has whelped a nice litter to the 1930 New Zealand Waterloo Cup winner Beau Geste. These are in Mr Moore’s kennel at Hamilton, and should make coursing history. There are 11 English and Irish Waterloo Cup winners on the dam’s side of the litter. As there is an absence of really good brood bitches in New Zealand, it will be interesting to follpw the career of these popularly-bred greyhound puppies. Mr R. Dickson’s (Paretai) Miss Murie has reared four really choice puppies by that stalwart performer Heroic. This is a good combination, and should be more than “ just dogs.”
