STANDARD OF LIVING

POWER TO VARY AWARDS LABOUR MEMBER URGES SAFEGUARDS. 'From Qua Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, April 1, Urging safeguards against a reduction in the standard of living by a variation of awards Mr D. G. Sullivan (Avon) said in the House to-night that 105,000 unionists would be affected by any general order which the Arbitration Court might make as a result of the Finance Bill, and the total number of people affected by the change would be about 450,000. This not only showed the importance of Parliament’s action in giving this power but emphasised the necessity to protect future awards from interference. This Bill, Mr Sullivan proceeded, significantly lacked an instruction to the court to consider the necessity for maintaining a decent standard of living when reviewing awards, an instruction which was made a special point of the 1922 salary cuts measure. The court would be justified, therefore, in concluding that the Legislature had deliberately left any such instruction out of this Act.
