Some interesting figures showing a comparison of the exports of meat—lamb, beef, and mutton —from South Amercia, Australia, and New Zealand were quoted by Mr John Gilkinson, chairman of directors, at the annual meeting of the Southland Frozen Meat and Produce Export Co., Ltd., on Saturday morning. The figures dealt with the increases in export shipments during the 1930 season, compared with 1929. Dealing with lamb the speaker said that South America exported 4,911,670 carcasses for the 1930 season, an increase of 531,787 compared with the -1921 season. Australia exported 2,220,582 carcasses, an increase of 726,067. New Zealand exported 7,146,146 carcasses, an increase of 1,404,564. Thus, South America and Australia together exported to Britain 7,132,252 carcasses, a combined increase of 1,257,854 for the season, while with New Zealand the total exports for the three countries were 14,278,398, making a combined increase of 2,662,418. In beef, South America exported 6,085,478 quarters, an increase of 62,786. Australia exported 575,107, an increase of 19,312. New Zealand exported 145,073, an increase of 101,938, and together, therefore, South America and Australia exported 6,660,586 quarters, a combined increase of 82,098. The total exports of the three countries were thus 6,805,659, and the combined increase 184,036 quarters. The figures dealing with mutton showed that South America exported 1,904,604 carcasses, a decrease of 199,454, and Australia exported 726,519, an increase of 873,509. New Zealand exported 2,555,326, an increase of 803,780.
