ROUTES Ltd London, have pleasure in announcing the appointment of Todd Motor Co. as New Zealand distributors of the HUMBER and HILLMAN CARS ANY people will remember the visit of Mr. W. E. Rootes, Joint Managing Director of Rentes Ltd., London (one of the largest retail Motor Distributing Houses in the world) to Australia and New Zealand in 1927. The Annual turnover of Rootes English business being approximately £9,000,000 per annum, Mr. Rootes felt assured that English cars could be sold abroad if a right policy was adopted. His personal world tour convinced him that to make progress in the Overseas field it would be necessary to secure control of/a British Factory so that a policy based on the result of his overseas investigations could be promptly carried out. Immediately on his return to England, Rootes Ltd. secured control of the famous HILLMAN works at Coventry, and soon afterwards the HILLMAN STRAIGHT EIGHT car was introduced. Very shortly, Rootes Ltd. were successful in bringing about the largest Motor Merger in Great Britain, the amalgamation of the Humber Co. (one of the oldest British Motor Car Manufacturers) with the Hillman Motor Car Company, and Commer Cars Ltd. (one of the original Commercial Vehicle Manufacturers) under the name of the HUMBER HILLMAN COMMER COMBINE. , The success achieved in one year was so great that the Prudential Assurance Coy. (the World’s largest Life Office) became interested, and after the fullest investigation by Sir George May, head of the above Company, placed i further vast and practically unlimited capital at the disposal of Rootes Ltd. to develop the business. That was November 1929. Since then this combine has made wonderful progress and has completely re-organised its large works covering approximately 100 acres—with the most modern equipment in the World for turning out high quality Motor Vehicles at low prices. / The Rt. Hon. Stanley M. Bruce Says: “You are getting the right type of car. Your work is absolutely reliable.” The British Government have become keenly interested in this development, which is doing so much for British Industry and Trade. The Eight Honourable J. H. Thomas, who is a very frequent visitor to the Works, says, “ I congratulate the firm on their progress.” During the year 1930, the HUMBER-HILLMAN-COMMER COMBINE factories as a development of outstanding Empire interest and importance have been visited by members of the Imperial Press Conference, the Prime , Ministers attending the Imperial Conference, and the distinguished delegates to the Indian Round Table Conference. All these visitors have been most enthusiastic about what they saw and have publicly stated that they felt the Humber Hillman and Commer products were destined to become enormously popular in the Overseas Dominions. CAPTAIN IRVING, designer of the world famous Golden Arrow, is the Technical Director of the Combine and the new Humbers and Hillmans owe their great success to his genius. In appearance, performance, comfort and safety, they offer something that will startle New Zealand; something entirely new; something every overseas Briton will be proud of. The hill climbing power, and acceleration of these new models has to be tried to be really appreciated. One of the leading American Motor Trade Journals says that the Humber Hillman Motor Cars are the most formidable rivals American manufacturers have in the overseas markets to-day. The Rt. Hon. Sir James Parr Says: “ A car of the type that will meet our needs and will sell readily in New Zealand.” Under such auspices the 1931 HUMBER Cars (including the already famous “Snipe,” the most talked of car of the day) and the HILLMAN Cars (including the new “Vortic” Straight Eight cylinder model) come to New Zealand. THE DISTRIBUTION of HUMBER HILLMAN products by THE TODD MOTOR COMPANY is in furtherance of Rootes’ Policy of utilising Motor Organisations of the highest type in all overseas countries, and is the initial guarantee to the public that the Cars are suitable for New Zealand conditions, the Toddi Motor Company having thoroughly satisfied themselves, before accepting the appointment. FINALLY, this appointment guarantees SERVICE and LASTING SATISFACTION to all New Zealand purchasers of HUMBER and HILLMAN Cars—past, present, and future.
