FALL FROM A SCAFFOLD.
MAN BADLY INJURED.. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 19. _ Falling 100 feet, W. J. Compton, rigger, when working upon the new Courtenay Place Post Office in Cambridge terrace, was so seriously injured to-day that he later succumbed. He was working on a platform at the top of a column shortly before 1 o’clock this afternoon when the accident happened. Without giving any warning the wire holding the platform snapped. Compton was flung downward, and was unable to clutch at anything to stay his fall. He crashed into the foundation well more than 100 feet below. Other workmen rushed to the spot where he had fallen, and the ambulance was summoned. He was found to have suffered a compound fracture of both feet and severe injuries to the left elbow in addition to shock and internal injuries. Compton, who was employed by the Hansford Mills Construction Company, lived at Hugh street, off Adelaide road. He was taken to hospital, where he died at 5.45.
