! SUCCESS IN BUSINESS. Speaking at the prize-giving in con- ' nection with Pitman’s College, Sir Fran--1 cis Goodenough, chairman of the Govern- | ment Committee on Education for Sales- ' . manship, said he would place character before ability as the qualification for suc--1 cess in a business career. 1 “A man or woman may be ever so : clever, charming, accomplished, and full ■ of knowledge,” he said, “yet if his character be unsound and crooked, _he is 1 worse than negatively useless, he is posi--5 tively harmful, and the higher position • he holds the more harmful he becomes. ? " Brains without character are a serious danger. They are to be found . in every prison in the land. They were [ the cause of the Great War. B plus C : is the successful business equation. Aot everyone can be a general manager, but , everyone can be a man.” I Speaking of promotion, Sir Francis said: “Climbing is the true joy of life. It is far more exciting than pottering ‘ along on the level, and no job is worth , having if it does not involve plenty ot , hard work.”
