SOUTH OTAGO.

BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

BALCLUTHA, February 10. The concert in connection with the school jubilee, given last night in the Oddfellows’ Hall, was one of the happiest in a markedly successful series of celebrations. The hall was packed with a large audience, which applauded enthusiastically every item on a programme contributed to mostly by ex-pupils of the school. The musical selections and songs belonged tor the most part to an earlier period, and recalled memories both bitter and sweet in the hearts of the hearers. Mr W. M'Elrea, a former headmaster, presided jointly with-Mr J. H. Matheson (an exassistant of the school, who had charge of the concert part of the programme). The chairman read telegrams and messages from ex-pupils in various parts of New Zealand who regretted _ inability to attend, and wished the jubilee all success. Included were two messages from Australia, and one from Miss Beryl Stevens (China), while the Minister of Education (Mr H. Atmore) telegraphed his regret that the Hawke’s Bay disaster had prevented him from attending the jubilee. , . The accompanists during the evening were Miss M. Smythe (Kaitangata), Miss Bella Clark (Nelson), Mrs Christenson (Dunedin) Miss Aitchison, Miss D. Matheson, Mrs J. H. Matheson, and Mr Athol Wise (Balclutha). A notably successful and enjoyable concert concluded with the singing of " Auld Lang Syne ” and “ God Save the King.” EXCURSION TO EAKA POINT. Yesterday afternoon some 200 ex-pupils and others were motored to. Kaka Point, going on to Kororo Creek, and returning to Balclutha by way of the high road. The weather was delightful, and the excursion was a pronounced success.
