GYMKHANA AND RODEO

AN ATTRACTIVE CARNIVAL. VERY LARGE ATTENDANCE. The gymkhana and rodeo at Tahnna Park, under the auspices of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society, St. Kilda Band, and St. Kilda Beach Improvement Society, was concluded on Saturday after a delightful time for the spectators and a period of unlooked-for and welcome prosperity for the promoters. The afternoon was beautifully fine, with a warm sun, and the evening was pleasant without a breath of wind. There was a very large attendance on both occasions. ■ The wood chopping and the log sawing, which arc novel items to townspeople, were watched with interest, and the steer riding elicited applause as well as laughter.

At the close of the steer-riding competition the chairman of the executive (Mr H. Turner) presented the winner, Mr J. Aubrey, with a gold medal for the South championship. In doing so lie called attention to the fine stamp of men who had come in from the country and advised town youths to take to the land. Mr Aubrey, in thanking the executive for the medal, endorsed the chairman’s remarks. “ Take to steer riding,” he said, “and you’ll soon .come to the land,” Mr Turner also thanked the public for attending in large numbers. The funds derived from the entertainment will be divided by the promoting bodies, and a proportion will go to earthquake relief. The St. Kilda Band gave a quickstep item under the conductorship of Mr J. Dixon, with Mr Donaldson as drum-major, and subsequently played music for the pleasure of the crowd. The dancing by the Maori girls earned warm plaudits, the poi dance being an item that was specially good. Numerous other events added variety to the entertainment, and after daylight the side-shows and the cabaret enjoyed a season of considerable prosperity till about midnight. Members of the committees did much to promote the success of the entertainment; the ring master (Mr J. Mce) had his hands full all the time, and to the press steward (Mr J. F. Himburg) our thanks are due for information courteously supplied to our representative.
