AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS. The standard of the preliminaries in several events of the Otago track and field championships, which were decided on a slow track at the Caledonian Ground last night, augurs well for the success of the meeting to be held this afternoon. In the field events several preliminaries were contested, and the best performers will compete this afternoon along with other outside competitors who were unable to be present last night. Two heats in the 440 Yards Championship were decided, the remaining heat being set down for 1.30 tins afternoon. There were no real surprises. L. G. M’Lachlan, the present champion, won his heat from A. L. Price. In the second heat the esNow Zealand champion, A. W. Finlay, failed to qualify, being out of form. J. Robilliard, with a jump of 20 feet 04 inches, registered a good performance in the Broad Jump Championship. The following are the results: — 440 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. First heat: L. C. M'Lachlan (C.S.), I; A. L. Price (Ang.), 2; S. King (L.), 3. Won by four yards, with 10 yards between second and third. The first two placed men eased up at the tape. J. B. Drnmm (Dunedin) also started. Time, 53 4-uscc. Second heat; C. J. Thompson (C.S.), 1; T. R. Buxton (0.U.), 2; A. W. Finlay (Ang.), 3. There was a good finish. Won by indies, with five yards between second and third. S. F. Corbett (Cav.) also started. Time, 54 3-ssec. THROWING THE JAVELIN CHAMPIONSHIP. Australian and New Zealand record. 205 ft ]Uin—S. A. Lay. 1920, Present champion, P. G. Ward, 138 ft Tlin. P. G Ward (Anglican). 136 ft 9in, S. Ward (C.S.) 122 ft 9in, and J. M'Crae (Anglican) 122 ft Olin registered the best performances. Also competed: J. G. Holt (Pacific)* J. Robilliard (Anglican), J. W. Hoodie (Anglican), and G. Sabiston (St. Hilda). THROWING THE DISCUS CHAMPIONSHIP. . New Zealand record, 139 ft 2in—P. Munro (New Zealand), 1930. Present champion, J. G. Leckie, 99ft Gin. J. W. Webster (Anglican) 85ft 2iin, L. R. Stroud (Anglican) 82ft Gin, and A. G. Holt (Pacific) 82ft 3Jin, registered the best throws. Also competed: R. O. Johnson (Anglican), P. G. Ward (Anglican), G. B. P. Wilson (0.U.), E. A. Bastings (C.S.), and J. W. Johnson (Anglican). BROAD JUMP CHAMPIONSHIP. New Zealand record. 23ft 34m —J- W. Merchant (U.S.A.), 1923. Present champion, R. O. Johnson, 20ft Gin. J. Robilliard (Anglican) 20ft OJin, L. M. Wright (Anglican), 19ft 44m, and R. O. Johnson (Anglican) 19ft 14in, were the best performers. Also competed: A. G. Holt (Pacific), T. R. Buxton (0.U.), P. G. Ward (Anglican), J.
