WEATHER FOR JANUARY.
METEOROLOGIST'S REPORT. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 6. The following notes on the weather of January are supplied by the Director of Meteorological Services: — The conditions as regards crops end pastures underwent a considerable improvement during January owing to the. increased rainfall. Much of the vegetation exhibited spring-like features for the second time this season. On the whole, the month was very stormy and wet, and the temperatures were below normal, especially in the western districts. The month was a very wet one for most of the western districts, but particularly so on the West Coast and high country of the South Island. In Southern Westland it was, perhaps, the wettest January on record. Several stations received over 40 inches. Except in the northern and east coast districts, the North Island temperatures were below the previous average. At Wellington and on the West Coast of the South Island the amounts by which the mean temperature fell below the January average have seldom been exceeded. The frost on the I7th in Christchurch was the severest ever recorded in January. Weather of westerly type prevailed throughout the greater part of the month. There was a number of rather severe depressions, most of them being accompanied by several, "secondaries.” Anti-cyclones passed mainly to the north of New Zealand, and consequently, though there* was much fine weather with hot and dry winds in the eastern districts, in those with a westerly aspect the fine spells were few and of short duration. The month was generally regarded as a very unpleasant one for the time of the year.
