LORD MELCHETT. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.}' LONDON, December 27. (Received Dec. 28, at 5.5 p.m.) The death is'announced of Lord Mclebett. . Lord Melcbett, who was formerly Sir Alfred Mond, was a Liberal member of the House of Commons from 1900 to 1923 and from 1924 to 1920. He was First Commissioner of Works from 1910 to 1021, and Minister of Health from 1921 to 1922. In' 1026 he joined the Conservative Party, and he was raised to the Peerage two years later. Lord Melchett was President of the World Power Conference in ll)28, and he was chairman of the Economic Board for Palestine. For some time he was one of the' proprietors of the Westminster Gazette, and he’ was . chairman of Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., and other companies. His speeches against Socialism attracted much attention iq 1925, and he worked unceasingly in the cause of industrial peace. THE KING’S SYMPATHY. LONDON, December 27. (Received Dec. 28, at 11.50 p.m.) Though generally agreeing that his political career was comparatively undistinguished, the newspapers unanimously pay tributes to Lord Melchett’s business genius , and sincerity, and his attempts, to reconcile masters ..and men. They regret his loss at a critical period of national life,* and the Observer says: “ England loses an inspiring impulse in scientific industry, a man of the highest intellectual power.” The Sunday Express says he was the greatest of all British industrialists. The announcement is made of the death of Mr George Sherrill, a wellknown New Zealand artist; The deceased was the pioneer of art in Wanganui, and took many prizes in New Zealand and the Old Country. MR P. R. ADAMS. • (Per United Press Association.) NELSON, December 27. The death is announced of Mr Percy Bolland Adams, a prominent Nelson resident for many years, aged 70 years. Colonel Adams, of Auckland, is hie son. MRS EILEEN FOWLER. Regret will be felt by New Zealanders at the death of Mrs Eileen Fowler, wife of Mr R. H. Fowler, M.A., 0.8. E., F.R.S., and only daughter of Sir Ernest and Lady Rutherford. Advice has been received in Christchurch that Mrs Fowler died suddenly at her home at Cambridge, England, on Wednesday, December 24. Mrs Fowler was born in Canada and was married in 1921. She leaves a family of four children. Mrs Fowler never came to New Zealand. Sir Ernest Rutherford was born in Nelson, and graduated at Canterbury College. He has bad a distinguished career at Cambridge. Lady Rutherford spent a num-; ber of years of her early life in Christchurch, and is.at present on a visit to relatives in that city. Mr Fowler is a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and is lecturer in mathematics.
