ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

INJURED IN MOTOR SMASH. (Per United Press Association.) DARGAVILLE, December 23. At 5 o’clock last night John Paton, County traffic inspector, was riding his motor cycle in the direction of his home at , Te Kopuru when he had a head-on collision just over the Kaihu Bridge on the Main road with a motor van driven by a youth, named Silieh. It was raining hard at the time and evidently Paton did not see the van, which ran right over him, inflicting severe injuries to his head and legs, both of which are broken, and also to his arms and chest. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where an operation was performed and to-day, although his condition is very" serious, he is. much easier. Tho driver of the van escaped-injury. The motor cycle was badly smashed. SUDDEN DEATH, Mark Everett, aged 48 years, died suddenly in Kenmure road, Morningtou, about 7 o’clock yesterday morning, while op his way to work. He resided at 38 Pitcairn-street, Belleknowes, and was only a short distance from his home when he fell to the ground. Medioal assistance was procured as speedily as possible, but it was found that life was extinct. The deceased had been under medical treatment for the last five years for heart trouble, and as a certificate was* given by the doctor who had been attending him an inquest was not necessary. He was a cooper by occupation.
