ALABAMA CONVICTS
PAROLE FOR HOLIDAYS. ■ MAJORITY LONGTERM MEN. . t -~ . (United Press association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) NEW YORK, December 23. (Received Dec. 23, at 11.30 p.m.) The holiday season has been ushered in with six gang shootings and a crop of assorted murders, holdups, and burglaries. Racketeers have 'also begun to make a f levy on the Christmas tree business. They modestly demanded 10 cents per tree for the privilege of permitting retailers to unload shipments without molestation, and the consequence is that retail prices have soared. . . Alabama’s prison gates have been opened for more than 300 convicts, who are going home for Christmas on 15 days* parole. Most of the men have been convicted of murder or manslaughter, and have already served 25 years, their conduct having been meritorious. This is the third occasion on which longterm convicts have been rewarded, and only five have failed to return. No check is kept on their movements from to-day until January 5.
