CORNWELL CUP TRIALS. RACING IN STRONG BREEZE. The trial races between Takapuna class boats for the purpose of selecting a.crew to represent Otago in the Cornwell Cup contest at Auckland in January were continued last evening. One race was sailed over a windward and leeward course. The wind was fresh and steady from the northeast, which gave the crews every opportunity to show their sailing ability. The boats started from a line opposite Mr H, C._ Brown’s boatshed at Vauxhall, and sailed to a mark off Sunshine, then to the castle beacon, and back to the starting line, once round. The race was started at 7.49 p.m. Suzette was reefed down, but Colleen and Pupuke carried full sail. Pupuke was first to cross the line, and quickly opened up a big lead. Colleen almost came to grief when the spinnaker was being hoisted, and Burt had to bring her into the wind in order to house the sail. She lost fully Imin in consequence. Pupuke rounded the mark at Sunshine with a lead of about 45sec from Suzette. She did not hold the lead very long, as Colleen was well sailed and went into the lead when sheets were flattened for the beat to castle beacon. Pupuke’s forestay carried away after she commenced the beat to the weather mark and retired from the race. Colleen increased her lead on the last two or three tacks and again on the run to the line, which she crossed 2min ahead of Suzette.' The official sailing' times were:— Colleen (E. and J. Burt), 44m 53sec •. 1 Suzette (Mason and Spratt), 46m 53s 2 Pupuke was manned by Davis and Cuthpert. * VAUXHALL CLUB RACES. The Vauxhall Power Boat and Sailing Club held its first race of the season last evening under favourable conditions. It was intended to hold a race for outboard motor boats, but as only; craft, Ace High, from Christchurch, put in an appearance, the event was postponed. Six boats competed in the race for 16ft and under yachts, which sailed over a windward and leeward course, starting off the club’s jetty, then to a mark off the Belcher wall, then round castle beason, and back to the starting' line, once round. Five yachts started. When they crossed the line Starlight and Heather came together and sailed for some distance locked together. On the run to the Belcher wall mark Squib’s peak halyards carried away and she retired. Heather went into the lead on the beat to the castle beacon mark. _ Some of Swastika’s running gear carried away-shortly after the start, and she. retired. Starlight held second position- on the beat, but she reduced Heather’s lead on the run, and the boats sailed on even terms for some distance, when Heather raced into the lead again. The result was:— Heather (45sec), 35min 20sec 1 Starlight (scr), 36min 50sec 2 Winifred (2min SOsec), 37min 45sec .. 3
