TOMAHAWK ROAD

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —With reference to a letter published in your columns on Tuesday morning dealing with the work at present bein'l- - out by the City Council on the Tomahawk road, I heartily agree with Disgusted that the fence which is being erected is quite inadequate to protect the little ones. Danger has a peculiar fascination for small children, and, although parents may issue countless warings, there is always the possibility of their curiosity leading them to climb on to the fence just to, see what it is that they have been warned to keep away from. The matter of the footpath, which is the main highway to the cemetery, and is traversed by thousands of people throughout the year, is of immediate importance. Looking ahead, one must think of the wet winter months, when pedestrians will find it almost impossible to trudge through clay and gravel from the terminus to the cemetery. Would it not be better for the City Council to consider a footpath of a permanent nature and thus reduce the heavy maintenance charges whtch are being incurred on a path which is so much used by ratepayers, not only of Anderson’s Bay, but of all Dunedin? Furthermore, many visitors make use-of this highway to obtain what may be termed one of the most picturesque panoramas of Dunedin. No doubt the views which have been expressed on the subject will immediately influence the local Ratepayers’ Association, so that it will undertake to obtain for the people of Dunedin a necessity of paramount importance. “ Disgusted has by no means overstated his case, and I am sure his views are those which will be confirmed by Bay residents.—l am, etc.. Pedestrian.
