INTERPROVINCIAL CONTEST. CANTERBURY TEAM VICTORIOUS. Despite the cold, boisterous weather on Saturday night, a crowd numbering somewhere in the vicinity of 3000 people gathered at the broadsiding stadium to witness the interprovincial- match between riders representing Canterbury and Otago. It was anticipated that the Canterbury team would be a hard one to beat, and so it proved. After a series of races, in which the fortunes alternated between tbe two, the te&m from tbe northern province ran out victorious by the margin of four points, Otago securing 24 points to Canterbury’s 28. Although it must be admitted from the start that there were some particularly good riders among the visitors, it is oj’y fair to state , that Otago had most of the bad luck. Several times Otago men were in a good position when a fall or some trouble with their machines ruined their chances. Miller waa the most unfortunate in this respect. With tetter luck and his engine in better tune, he would probably have been one of the outstanding riders of the contest. Afl it was, there, were three men who, “7 their daring, skill, and general broadaiding ability, stood out from ■ the rest. They were Mangham, Marsh, and Lnnn. Maugham was the best rider on the track, a **d thoroughly deserved his victory in the final of the South Island Championship. At ths B&CH6 time, h© h&d & • very close rival in Marsh, whose brilliant cornenng and speed on the straight made him the most dangerous of the Canterbury team, though Lunn, who won three, of the match races and was second . to Mangham in the final of the South Island Championship, also proved himself a very fine broadsider. There was little worthy of note in the riding of the competitors in the Speedway Royal Handicap. The times in this event were, all poor, and none of the riders had sufficient dash on the corners to arouse to any degree the excitement of the crowd. There can be no doubt that the removal'of a considerable amount of the cinders from the tr&ck has been a wise step, and, once the local riders become used to the lighter covering, there is little doubt that the times will improve. . As usual, the meeting was well controlled, and, although most of the races w . er ® from , rolling started the programme of IB events was run off in a little over two hours. Lunn 2 Mangham was again the first out of the bend, and, leaning over at desperate angles he roared into the corners, waves of cinders flying from the rear of his machine. Bunn was also riding well, but he was scarcely of Maugham’s class. Admittedly a “ night of accidents,” the first meeting between the visitors from England and Australia and the local riders at the Kilbirnie Stadium on Saturday night was a disappointing one. Five of them required replacements, and in nearly every case it was one of the visitors who could not ride. The match, was won by Wellington by 29 points to 22.
