HEADING SOUTH

THE MAWSON EXPEDITIdN,

DISCOVERY IN A STORM,

(United Press Association.)

(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, December 19. (Received Dec. 19, at 5.5 p.m.) Sir Douglas Mawson reports that after |eaving Macquarie Island he took soundings in the vicinity of the Bishop Clarh Islets, which, rising from a Macquarie submarine shelf, constitute a danger to shipping. The Discovery was stormtossed for several days, rendering a search for the elusive Emerald Island imprac ticable. The ship at last emerged from the mists into a clear sea decked with broken ice, and came into touch with the whaler Sir James Clark Ross, which has coal for the Discovery, whose personnel are all well despite temperatures which are generally below freezing point.
