MAIL STEAMERS.
PAYMENT OF HARBOUR DUES. (Sprclai. to Dailt Times.) WELLINGTON, December 19. A protest against mail steamers being given exemption from all harbour duos was made by a deputation from the Wellington Harbour Board to the Postmastergeneral (Mr J. B. Donald) to-day. The deputation was authorised to speak also on behalf of the Auckland Board. It was pointed out by the deputation that the Government was calling for a renewal of the mail service to San Francisco and Vancouver or a new Panama service, and in the, special contract conditions for which tenders' were called closing on January 14 was a clause exempting steamers while carrying malls from the payment of, all harbour dues, including pilotage, harbour masters’ fees, and harbour improvement rate on cargo. In reply, the Minister stated that as far as mail steamers via Panama were concerned he would sec that they paid dues, but he could not promise anything in respect of the San Francisco and Vancouver services.
