CHESS BY WIRELESS.

A NOVEL MATCH. OTAGO v. AUSTRALIAN CLUB. A .novel chess match was played last evening between an Otago and an Australian, team, when wireless was need as the medium. Thanks to the courtesyand assistance of Mr L. D. Stroud (ZL4AD), assisted by Messrs G. Samson (ZL4AC), R. Robinson (ZL3AM), J. C. Callender (ZL4DT), the match was arranged betweeh the Otago Club and the Millions Club, of Sydney. The transmission set used locally and in Australia wan a Harley , transmitter, ■ and all those assisting, were enthusiastic amateurs. The Sydney calls were VK2RC, YK2RT, VE3HU, and VK2HY. No difficulty was experienced at either end, and six games were . commenced 'at 8.30. ..Progress was not too fast because the Sydney moves had to be relayed by land line from the Millions Club. The players and openings were as follows (Otago names being given first): — J. B. Dunlop v. H. F. Crane (Evan’s Gambit). W. G. Stcnbouse v. E. G. Calvert (Queen's Gambit Declined). ‘ L. D. Coombs v. S. Henderson (Queen's Gambit Declined). 0. IJalk an d x. Thomas (King's Gambit Declined). R. M'Dermid t, J. Rutherford (Pbilodor’a Defence). Dr G. Barnett v. A. Ferguson (Queen’s Pawn). Otago had the move on the odd boards. Up to the time of going to press no games were finished, but it was intended to play on for a farther two hours, and the unfinished games will be judged in Sydney. Prom every point of view the experiment of playing chess by short-wave wireless Was highly successful, the operators at each end giving every satisfaction. This result was mainly due to the arrangements made by Mr and Mrs Stroud, of St. Clair, and the Otago Chess Club is mucb indebted to them for their hospitality.
