A GRADE COMPETITION. The ill-fortune that-has pursued lawn tennis players throughout the , present, season followed them again on-Saturday, when,, as a result of showers late in the afternoon, most of the matches -were. un-. finished. 1 Cosy Dell had a straight-out win against Kaitnna, losing only two of the 10 matches ?i! a ? ed o- denaen and Sherriff won both their Singles and Doubles in straight Sets, and altogether were too, solid for Phillippa and Penrose, though the latter pair made a good fight of it in the second set of the Doubles. The Ladies’ .Singles- broke evenly, Miss White and Miss Kibblewhite winning for Kaituna and Mrs Bell and Mrs Jensen for Cosy Dell. Otago scored a sweeping victory over the, second Roslyn team, winning each of the six men’s events and three of the ladiear matches., -The Otago players were definitely superior to their opponents in most cases, and they also possessed greater match experience. Anderson's Bay, which has made a good showing m 'all its. matches IJiis season, put up a stern fight against the-strong Moana team, and at the end of the day Moana was only one match up. with three , 40 -“§ ? ? yed - Guy gave a good disdriving and volleying to defeat G. Pearce in straight sets, and Duthie ahowed good form against Ross, whom he defeated 6—2, 6—4. Moana’s stock then slumped,, and Barsdell and J. Pearce the match by defeating Chisholm and Cooke. The-Ladies” Singles were all well contested, and revealed a good standard of steady and accurate play. Miss Moloney and Miss Sherriff won for Moana and Miss Read and Miss Hall for Aridersons Bay, so that the match was again all square.” , Guy and Duthie had' a ,e a « a >nst G. A correspondent forwards the following comments on the C2 Grade match between North-East Valley and St. Mary’s: The outstanding game of the afternoon was the, ladies’ singles between Miss D. Paterson (Valley) and Miss N. Jones (St. Marys), Both these young players gave a good exhibition of hard, clean hitting, and placed their, shots well. Miss 1 aterson won 6—-1, but she bad to fight hard for every point, and the score does JJht entirely indicate the run of the game, they started off at a good pace and kept it. up throughout, driving with nice length on both the backhand and forehand. In every game the rallies were long, and in some of them the ball crossed the net between .10, and 12 times, and even then when a mistake was made the ball would rmss the line by a narrow margin. The valley Club has in Miss Paterson a player of great promise, who should soon be in a higher grade. Miss P. Crookshanks was much too good for Miss E. Crowley (St. Mary’s), whom she defeated easily. Miss Crowley seems to have gone off her game since the start of the season. Miss M. Chapman-Cohen (St. Mary s) played good tennis to defeat Miss Howison (Valley). This is another promising player who should be heard on - Miss E. Henaghan (St. Mary s) is rather patchy in her play, and needs, to take a little more care with her shots and be less eager to hit everything. 0 The Valley men were too strong for bt. Mary s . winning all their singles and both men s doubles. R. Richards and I. K xA p ore , the best of the Valley men. Both played good tennis, but Richards Y aß baugM -time and again by N. Dennis (St. Mary’s) with a well-placed lob. -He should- remedy, the fault of going to. the. net on. the loose shot. N., Dennis and L. M Connell, were the best of St. Mary’s men - ft was noticeable during the afternoon that a number of the players .(especially those from St. Mary’s) were not keeping theeir eye on the ball. Instead, they were watching the player ®P po A lt ®> and this |s fatal in tennis. North-East Valley has a well-balanced team, and appears to have a good chance of winning the C2 banner.
