PRECEPT AND PRACTICE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —One notices some glaring examples of inconsistency from the farming section,of the community. Now look at Mr Revie and Mr Murney, two of the most prominent leaders in the Farmers’ Union, protesting ad lib. against the deficiencies of the Government (not that I have any brief for the latter) and expounding their views on what should be done. Yet in your issue of yesterday, happening to glance at the report of the Tuapeka County Council, of which these two gentlemen are members, I noticed that an appeal from its ratepayers, apparently a very reasonable one, received little or no consideration. In all business concerns retrenchment is the order of.'the day. If farmers cannot help themselves and each other, how can they expect any clemency from the business man? The members of the Tuapeka County Council are evidently fortunate farmers. It is nice to know there are still some financially happy farmers, but this really gives them no cause to treat ungenerously their less fortunate brothers.. , Thank goodness the majority of public bodies throughout the Dominion are showing an intelligent knowledge of the desperateness of our present position, and are trying to put their houses in order, —I am, etc., “Practice What You Preach.” Dunedin, December 10.
