At a meeting of the executive of the hospital boards, held to-day, various phases of the unemployment question were discussed. It was mentioned that the Government would be well advised to take steps to restrict the influx of unemployed from other countries which might occur as a natural result the unemployed problem being substantially relieved in this country. The residential clause in the Unemployment Bill would have the effect, it was felt, of throwing the liability on to the hospital boards in the case of indigent new arrivals, and the relief which the hospital boards hoped to obtain under the Unemployment Act might thereby to a certain extent be cancelled.
