One, ‘ Joseph Schmidt, a notorious criminal, was caught in a cave at Hiirstville. He made another bid for freedom, leaping over the heads of the police, but was caught and, ironically enough, taken back to gaol in the same van from which he made his cunning getaway. This time, however, the floor was of steel. Two men who were on remand in connection with charges of alleged complicity in housebreaking were being transported in a police van through a busy street in Annandale on November 15, when they tore up the flood boards, dropped through, and escaped. The efforts of another prisoner to give the alarm to the driver and the escort were counteracted for some time by the noise of the traffic. Then the constables received the surprise of their lives.
