AMATEUR SWIMMING.

DUNEDIN CLUB’S CARNIVAL. SUCCESSFUL OPENING MEETING.

The Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club’s jnnual carnival—the opening club carnival of the season—was held in the, Municipal it 1 j ast ev l a, ?B> in the presence of an • nce , w bich, probably on account ot .the carnival coming so soon after the primary schools’ and Normal School meetings, was. somewhat disappointing. c . n formally declaring the carnival open, bir •Charles Stathara, who is patron of the club, said that he was glad to know that the; membership of the club was increas.mg,- and that all , the clubs in Dunedin were working in harmony with one another. Apart from the fact that swimming was one of the most healthful of all recreations, _it was essentially the one Bp °rh .in every child should become imp*- , 5* , was to the children that they had to look for their future champions, and he hoped before long to see additional public oaths in Dunedin — in the north end and one in the south end—so that every school child would have the opportunity to learn to swim.— (Applause.) For the first carnival of the season the e S£ lee were most encouraging, all clubs affiliated tothe centre being well repreeented, and in the 33 1-3 Yards Interclub Handicap five heats were necessary, most of the other races having to be swum off in two and three heats.

The handicapper (Mr W. Jenkins) was fet a somewhat difficult task in framing handicaps with only last year’s form to go on, but the manner in which the swimmers were brought together in some exceedingly close finishes was a tribute to ins work, and he is to he congratulated on -having given general satisfaction. An event which it is hoped will be a feature of other carnival programmes was-the scratch Family Relay Race, which brought forward no fewer than five teams consisting of three members of a family. The race, which resulted in a win for thei Newall family (Miss W. Newall and D. and V. Newall) by three, yards, raised the crowd to an intense pitch of enthusiasm. The majority of the teams comprised three swimmers who are in active competition, but in the case of the Jarvis family, Mr H. Jarvis swam with his two sons, and although he is now approaching the veteran stage, he performed very creditably. During the evening the Dunedin Club’s diving troupe gave an exhibition of plain and fancy diving, which was loudly applauded. The following are the results:—• • 50 YARDS GIRLS’ HANDICAP. Miss M.
