FORBURY PARK MEETING ERIN’S FORTUNE WINS PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. GOOD PERFORMANCE BY RED SHADOW.. The Forbnry Park Trotting Club’s spring meeting was concluded in very favourable circumstances. The weather was mild and an absence of wind contributed towards the enjoyment of the sport provided by the card. The track provided first-clam going and some • fast marks were established during the afternoon. A large attendance filled the stands and enclosures and although investments £Q°wed a shrinkage it was only about what could be anticipated in the existing circumstances. Two hot favourites in Royal Comrade and Stanley T. suffered defeat, but on the whole the backers were close to the judge’s verdict in their anticipations.

A full card lined up for the Suburban Handicap and despite Todd Lonzia’a reputation they went for public form and made Welcome Guy nearly an even money favourite. : At the despatch several broke up, and when well on the way Merrijiggs and Rapture were in charge from Wei-' come Guy, Ette Bells, Pattie Bingen, and Todd Lonzia, all racing in close order and well clear ,of Hydro. Welcome Guy moved up in the last half-mile and turned for home With Todd Lonzia on bis wheel. In the run home Welcome Guy, without apparently being fully extended, beat Todd Lonzia by a short length, and Rapture was a: moderate third. Todd Lonzia seemed inclined to lift when under pressure and Welcome- Guy made amends for what was deemed an unlucky defeat on the first day. Herod, Great Chenault, and Holly Bank were singled out as the most likely lot in the Advance Handicap. Backers were on the right track, as when beginning the final half-mile, Herod was going well "in behind Madam Locanda, with Holly Bank handy, and Great Chenault, who did -not begin well, moving up fast. Herod got to the front just after they turned for home, and • looked a winner, but Great (Chenault came with a strong run, and, although goinn to a skip at the finish, got up to beat Herod by a head. Madam Locanda finished three-quarters of a length away, beating. Holly Bank by a neck after; the last-named had gone to ’ a mix when halfway up the straight. Great Chenault went an excellent final half-

mile as he was racing well back from the - leaders when turning - into the back stretch. Royal Comrade was made a solid chance for the Empire Handicap and carried over £4OO more'-'than Brook Pointer, Mac Dillon got away with those on the front and led round the top. From that on be was never seriously, 'challenged and he won well. Royal .Comcade went a' solid race hut the advantage obtained by Mac Dillon made the latter unbeatable.. Royal Comrade went 2.7 from post’to .post and put up one of the smartest miles . ever timed on the track. Red Shadow won so well on the first day that backers had no hesitation in making him a solid chance for the Brighton Handicap. There was also good .support. for Holly Bank, who got well away with Speckled Gold and Automatic. Holly Bank was , soon in- charge and set a solid pace up to the home turn, where Red Shadow, after pacing well down the back stretch was handy to the leader. Red Shadow then raced to the. front and

won by three lengths from Holly Bank, who lasted, long enough to heat Real Girl by half a length. Erin’s Fortune, Steel All, and Grand Light were- the popular picks for the Forbury Handicap, but backers of the lastnamed received a shock before the race, as the Matfehlight horse fell heavily when doing a preliminary. There was no pace oh in the early stages, and Arikitoa went to the front. Erin’s Fortune, after skipping ~a little at the start, soon reached a handy position, and pacing with more level action than on the first day, scored well at the;finish. Arikitoa, after acting as pacemaker up to the home turn, faded out, and Great Logan, finishing on well, was a good_ second. . Grand , Light broke tip in the middle mile, and appeared to interfere with Steel All and Wrackeen. Avenger looked ■ like being dangerous in the final half, but bad to cover a lot ofground on the outside of the field. Stanley T. started - a pronounced favourite for the Victoria Handicap. He fell when lining up at the start, but promptly dropped into his gait when the field got away. Fifa and White Sati’n did not loiter on the way, and made the best use of their handicaps. With a mile to go Surprise Journey and Stanley T. were fairly handy to the leaders. Inside the final half-mile Stanley T. made a forward more that looked like landing him a winner, but he broke two furlongs and abalf from home, and again in the straight. White Satin got to Fifa at the home turn, and beat her in the run to the post by well over a length. Surprise Journey Went a good race, and finished close up third, but Stanley T. was showing more speed than the former when making a tun about three furlongs from home. •After going 2.45 3-5 in the Brighton Handicap, Red Shadow dominated the filtuation in the Tainui Handicap, where he was handicapped at a 2.20 gait. Red Shadow began smartly, and led all the to put up a track record by going 8.20 4-5, and clipping one second off the previous mark, established by Wrackeen. Hostess began well, and got a good ruri , the *aifs, but she faded in the final furlong. Both Kelp and Sodium put up a strong finish, but could not reach the winner, who provided further evidence of being a really high-class three-year-old. J 4: worgß went a .good race, but he, also stay on over the final furlong. AH the placed lot went inside the track record. ■fhe Recovery Handicap was, as usual, • good betting race. John Noble started ft sound favourite. He began well, but ks il. w^ o .playing up a bit at the start, blocked Jolly Chimes by locking wheels, and Warepa also lost ground Fortunately the mix up took place near the rails, and the back-markers got clear. , Na . bl e led from end to end. and never looked like defeat in the run borne, wli3 r j c « n,she . d °, D we!l - and so did Nelson de Oro, who kept Royal Comrade np^fifth* 1 ace ' ■^ rou d Dillon was close

NOTES ON THE RACING:

(From Oub Special Repobter.) AUCKLAND, November 29. Delightful weather favoured the opening of the Takapuna Jockey Club's spring meeting to-day and there was a ‘large attendance. The 5s totalisator proved popular with investors and was well patronised. However, the totalisator returns were down £5982 15s. All the winners were well-backed, but Sir Mond was the only actual favourite to score, and investors received severe reverses by the defeats of Havaspot, Tenakoe, and Paganelli. There were 19 runners in the Melrose Maiden Stakes, and Gay Idea and Chief Joy were quickly in “Out. They led for four furlongs, when Chief Joy and Operatic, who had run up fast on the outside, drew out slightly to show the way into the straight to Camp Princess, Gay Idea, and Tui Mint. Ciiier Joy stayed on under pressure to wm by three parts of a. length from Camp Princess who beat Operatic by f- n ® c h. Gay Idea was fourth,’ followed ■by Tm Mint, Royal Survey, and Spring ™ , winner is a good galloper by Chief Ruler from the imported mare Podokes. The Tiri High Weight Handicap WEB productive of a good finish, Trishna, the favourite, finishing on strongly to. win from Glenetar and Sleepy Sol, Armenia led for half a mile, when Ruby Dawn took up the running for another two furlongs. Then Patutahi and Always had a s - turn in the lead to give place at the ten-furlong post to Sleepy Sol, who led round the bend from Patutahi, Glenstar, and Luminary, with Trishna coming fast. Trishna maintained his effort in the straight to beat Glenstar by three parts of a length, Sleepy Sol being, half a length away third. Stonehenge was f°Mrth. followed by Patutahi, Luminary, and Kairuri. The winner came from a long way back and should be difficult to beat again on Monday. In the Borough Handicap, Nancy Lee Jed for two. furlongs, when she was joined, by Sir Russell, who had gone very fast from the extreme outside at the barrier. .At the. end of three furlongs Tenakoe went up on the outside of. the leaders, and then he and Sir Russell drew out. Tenakoe was beaten at the turn,' and Sir _ Russell led into the straight from White _ Wings, who finished on well to beat him by a length and a-half. Ho.’iiton was half a head away third, and Branson, was fourth. < Patiently ridden, Sir Russell might have won, and Tenakoe must also have done better if he had been ridden differently. Only one side of the barrier went up when the starter released the lever for the ■ Takapuna Plate, and some of ■ the horses on the outside were prevented froih getting away. Fortunately, the official, was able to recall the field, although Awamutu and Biddy’s Boy went ; a few furlongs before ■ they could' be pulled up. Biddy's Boy led early, to give way at the end of three furlongs to Tradesman, who led into the straight from Havaspot, King Ford, Tetrarchate, and Volimond. In the run home Volimond did best to beat Tetrarchate by half a length, with Karangapai a neck away third. Rosshire was fourth, followed by Havaspot and Tradesman. Vplimond’s effort wae' a good one, as she was in. .slight trouble near the turn, and then had to come on the outside. Tetrarchate ran easily his best race. The three-year-old Sargon registered a pleasing performance in winning the Alison Cup, and responded in very determined fashion when asked for a final effort in the straight. Flying Prince and Desert Glow carried the field along until five furlongs from home, when Eager Rose slipped through on the rails and led into the straight from Sargon, Gorinax, and True Blood. Once the pressure was applied Sargon asserted his superiority, and won well by a length from Eager Rose. True Blood was half a length back third, and Corinax was fourth. The next,to finish were Bennie and Nassock. It was not, a strong field, but Sargon’s performance was a good one; and he is seemingly a solid stayer. The C.J.C. Welcome Stakes winner Tea Chat was backed down to odds on for the Cambria Handicap, but he had to strike his colours to his stable-mate, Chief Jewel, who is trained by J. T, Jamieson for Mr F. Earl. Chief Jewel and’Hoihoma led into the straight just clear of Tea Chat,' and Chief Jewel finished on well to score by three parts of a length. Princess Bede, who finished fast, was a head away, third, *and Speedmint -was fourth. The winner, is by Chief Ruler from Spangle, and is a smart galloper likely to improve. - Making his second appearance for the day Sir Mond was made a good favourite for the Ponui Handicap/ and he duly scored, although he 'was a shade lucky to beat Manawhenua. who struck a little trouble along the back. Sir Mond and Clopton were quickly in the lead from Manawhenua, and they carried on the running right into the straight, where Manawhenua and Brampton were in close attendance. Sir Mond battled on well af the finish, and just held off Manawhenua. Clopton wae a head away third, and Neil was fourth. Next came Brampton and Claremore. Manawhenua is on the improve, and should win soon, while Brampton and Clopton should also be dangerous the next time they are produced in similar company. Paganelli was made favourite for the Cheltenham Handicap, but after missing the jump out he failed to show anything like his true form, and missed a place. 'Leitrim soon ran to. the front, and he just led into the straight from Royal Tea, who was clear of Billikins and Treasury. Leitrim outstayed Royal Tea at the finish, and beat him by a length. Lucy Rose was two lengths and a-half away third, and Treasury was fourth. Next came Paganelli and Billikins. Leitrim was always going like a winner, although he was hard pressed by Royal Tea at the turn. Royal Tea is on the improve, and will be a better horse for the race. Paganelli displayed some speed for a few furlongs, but did not appear dangerous at*any stage over the last three furlongs.
