TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting was held yesterday, Cr R, A. Kempshell presiding. Crs J. W. .Blair, M. Stevenson, J. Gow, T. Carrnthers, D. Mlntosh, C. Findlay, and W. Blackie were also present. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the past month had been £422 Os 6d. It recommended tor payment accounts totalling £2347 2s 3d, and the bank book showed, a debit balance of £2OBI 4s lOd. The committee had received prices for the conversion ■ of the council’s motor lorries from solid to pneumatic tyres, and submitted these to the council for decision in the matter. —Approved. Mr John Garrett (inspector of works) reported for the‘month as follows j East Taieri Riding.—Under Marshall’s contract 000 yards of gravel were carted out from Silverstream and delivered to the Silverside dump. The grading of Gladstone road from Owhiro to Shiands road would be finished at the end of that week. The clearing of Duke’s road ditch from the Owhiro-Gladfleld road to Riccarton road had been (completed. The willows had been cleared from the bed of the Silverstream at the junction' *of Kirkland’s and Douglas’s property. North Taieri Riding.—Under Hanlin’s contract the gravelling of the streets and footpaths in Mosburn had been completed. Gladstone and Vfangatui roads had been surfaced." Maintenance gravel from Milner’s pit had been run out on the section from the Central railway to Gordon road, Kaikorai Riding.—The following roads had been surfacedßrinsdon’e, M'Michan’s, Freeman’s, Fernhill. The work was held ,up by wet weather. Otokia Riding.—The following roads had been surfaced: —Old Brighton, MTntosh’s, Otokia, Kuri Bush, and .Tukatau. The balance of the Government grant for footpaths at Brighton had been expended in extending the footpath, from Bush’s to M‘Coil’s road. 'The culvert complained of by Mr T. Walsh had been shifted and put. in near Bush’s bridge, clear of his section. A footpath had been formed from Millar’s store to Mrs Nicholson’s. Regarding the letter from Mr Blakely concerning a footpath in front of his place, which was referred to Cr MTntosh and the inspector, they recommended that a 10ft footpath be formed past Blakely’s and Thomson’s properties. Messrs Blakely and Thomson had agreed to find the timber for the kerbing and also the gravel, the council to do the work. ■ Outram Riding.—The following roads had been surfaced: Allanton to Berwick, Loan, Qranton, and Nichol’s, The .timber water opening on D drain, at the county hut, Otokia, had been renewed with 48ft of 30in concrete pipes. That work was on a half cost basis with the Taien River Trust. Maungatua Riding.—The roads in the Henley district of that riding had been graded with the'power grader. Eightytwo yards of maintenance gravel°had been spread on Millar’s road and Woodside streets. Deep Stream Riding.—New culverts had been put in on Welsh’s road. The power grader, had been working on the road from Clark’s to Deep Stream. The power grader was working on the Pukcrangi road. The quarry squad would finish the quarrying of the stone on Castle Hill by the end of the month. They would then shift to Deep Stream to widen out the corners on the Middlemarch side of Deep Stream, No. 2 highway, preparmg for the schist spalls flud gravel to be spread on that section. The bulk of the stone for the Lee Flat road had been quarried ready fo be ■ carted out as soon as Mr Scorgie’s teams were free. Strath Taieri Riding.—-The section of the back road from Mathieson’s to Rock and Pillar siding had been graded with the‘power grader. The section of the six mile bridge at M'Kinnon’s was in progress. Repairs to the break in the riverbank at Cottesbrook bridge were near completion, Renwick’s and Newman’s roads had been graded with the power grader. Highways No. 2.—The gravel on the seoti . from Mosgiel to West Taieri Church had been graded with the power grader. The section from Ontram to-Clark’s had been surfaced and dragged. That highway was now in good order.—No. 3: The Duke’s road section had been graded with the power grader.—No. 4; Seven hundred and sixty, "yards of maintenance gravel had been run out from the Maungatua pit on the section from Woodside to Berwick Hill.—-No. 5: The contract for delivery of 1100 yards of gravel, Green Island to Brighton section, was in progress and should be finished well before the holidays. The contract for delivery of 800 cubic yards on Kuri Bush section and Leitch’s road had been started. —No. 6: This road was in fair order. The report was adopted. The sanitary inspector reported favourably on the slaughter houses in the county, on the piggeries at Green Island, and the boiling-down worts at Burnside. Twelve building permits were granted during the month. The ranger reported having visited the following ridings during the month:— Kaikorai, Otokia, Outram, Maungatna, East Taieri, and North Taieri. He had impounded six head of cattle. He asked for permission to take court proceedings against two owners of wandering stock. — Granted. CORRESPONDENCE. The Under-secretary for Lands forwarded a copy of the gazette notice proclaiming land for road and closing road on Education Reserve at Otokia School. —Noted. * .The Public Works Department forwarded monetary authority for the sixmile bridge at M'Kinnons,—Received. The scheme for expenditure thirds and fourths accrued to October 3, £2 11s lOd, was submitted for particulars of proposed expenditure to be supplied.—Approved. The chairman, No. 17 District Highways Council, replied to the council’s letter regarding bituminous paving work now being carried ont on the main road, Riccarton to Allanton, that the work conformed with the specification on which the contract had been let.—After an intimation by Cr Stevenson that Mr Ansell, M.P., and himself were investigating this matter, the letter was held over till next, meeting. The district engineer, Public Works Department, advised that no payment for gorse clearing under relief work would be made until resolution had been forwarded.—Cr Stevenson and the clerk to attend to the matter. The Elthara Borough Council submitted a scheme propounded by the Mayor for the relief of unemployment.— .Received. The Taieri River Trust wrote regarding the chain reserve round Lake Tatawai, Henley. The registrar held that this was a legal road, ‘and the consent of the county was required to closing it. —Tentative consent given. The chief surveyor, Dunedin, returned tracings of a road deviation at Green Island Bush, which he had approved.— Received. , The town clerk, Dunedin, replied to the council regarding an application for contribution to the maintenance repairs of the Henley-Berwick road owing to Waipori traffic, and stating that the City Council regretted it could not accede to the request. —Letter referred to the Finance Committee for a report. The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce wrote regarding the Deep Stream hill deviation, and advised that the chamber was prepared to support the motor ! club, the settlers, and the county in this : work being undertaken.—Letter received, a copy of the resolution passed at the last meeting to be forwarded to the writer.
