CITY POLICE COURT.
Thursday, October 9. (Before Mi; J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. William Carroll, a statutory first offender, charged -with drunkenness, -was fined 20s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. John Morgan Pauley, for whom Mr White appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge of using obscene language in a public place.—Sergeant Boulton said that the offence took place in Frederick street on Wednesday ■ evening. Pauley was a good worker when he remained out of town, but he was unemployed at present, and had been taking too much drink. Complaints were not infrequently received about him. —Mr White said that the facts were as Sergeant Boulton had stated. Pauley had- considerable domestic troubles. He had been working up to a short time ago, and was now trying to obtain work from the Otago Hospital Board. He suggested that the matter might be held over the defendant’s head for a period.—The magistrate eaid that Pauley had had two previous convictions for this offence. In view of his record, there was no course but to sentence him to two months’ imprisonment with bard labour.
