BRITISH CONSERVATIVES

CANDIDATE ,FOR BY-ELECTION. . AN INTRIGUING SITUATION. (United Press Association.) , . (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) .. LONDON, September 30. (Received Oct 1, at 0.30 a.m.) An intriguing political situation has arisen out of the South Paddington by. election. Lord Beaverbrook’s Empire Freetrade _ Party threatened to run it» own candidate unless the Prospective Conservative candidate, Sir Herbert Lidiard, swallowed the M’hole programme. Sir Herbert M’as duly adopted at a lively meeting, at which'his answers were considered so satisfactory that there, was no question of running an Empire Freetrade rival. : Sir Herbert, however, did not satisfy the United Empire Party, with.which Viscount Rothermere is associated, and it adopted Mrs Stewart Richardson. In the meantime, Mr Neville Chamberlain, chairman- ■of the Conservative Party, has written to Sir Herbert, saying that his answers at the meeting appear to have gone far beyond his expression of vieM-B at a personal interview, but the support of headquarters could not be accorded unless he was prepared to support the official policy. Sir Herbert replied that there was nothing in his policy to impair the Unity of the Conservative Party, and here the matter rests at present. Mr Stanley Baldwin, who has returned from Aix-lcs-Bains, ridiculed the suggestions concerning his resignation.
