ALPINE GUIDES.
QUESTION OF ISSUING LICENSES. (Peb United Pbess Association.) Wellington, September so. A conference to consider various matters in connection with the system of em. ploying guides at various resorts was commenced at Wellington to-day. In opening the conference, Mr Clinkard (the head of the Tourist Department) said that it had emanated from stfffcestions by the Alpine Unb that some action should be token by the Government in controlling the work of alpine guides. It was suggested that control would have to be worked through a system of licenses, and that for this some authority was required. The Tourist. Department, as such had n» direct interest in the matter of alpine K c'li -»?"J®, lc private ownership or the Mount Cook and other resorts, the owners of which employed their own guides. The Government, however, ap* patently considered that there was som* justification for the suggestion. The cot* fcrence is being held in private.
