LONDON, September 29, . (Received Sept. 29, at 5.5 p.m.) The death is announced of Prince Leopold of Bavaria, who was Commander-in-chief of the German Army in the East in the earlier stages of the war. Prince Leopold of Bavaria was bom at Munich on February 9, 1846, He was the second son of Prince Leopold, later Regent of Bavaria. As a young artillery officer he took part in the 1866 campaign and in the war of 1870-71 commanded a battery, serving with special distinction. For one act of bravery he was made a member of the Military Max-Josef Order. Towards the end of the Franco-German War he became lieutenant:Colonel of the Ist Bavarian Curassicr Regiment, but when the victorious troops made their entry into Munich he rode at the head of his old battery. Passing through the various military grades, the Prince was from 1887 to 1892 commander of the Ist Bavarian Army Corps at Munich, and from 1892 to 1913 inspector general of a district comprising five corps. In 1905 he was created a field marshal. In June, 191 a, he was appointed to the command of an army on the eastern front and captured Warsaw, which he entered on August 5, 1915. After the German advance had been held up in September he was commander of an army group, and later replaced Hjndcnburg as commander-in-chief in the East. After the collapse of Germany in November, 1918, he followed the example of Hindcnburg in placing himself at the disposal of the new Government in order to prevent chaos during the return and demobilisation of the troops. Prince Leopold, who’ married, in 1873, the eldest daughter of the late Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, the Grand Duchess Gisela, lived in Munich. He had four children. His oldest son. Prince George, in February, 1912, married the Archduchess Isabel of Austria, but the marriage was declared null and void early in 1913 by the Bavarian Courts and the Holy See. He served during the war as colonel, and in 1921 he became a priest. Prince Conrad, his brother, in the , same year -married Princess Bona of Savoy-Genoa. The eildest daughter. Princess Elisabeth, is the wife of Count Seefried-Buttonheim, while the younger, Princess Augusta, is married to the Archduke Joseph and lives at Budapest. ■
