PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. u ij very successful social gathering was held by the Otago centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association in the Salon on Saturday night, wnen the. prizes won during the harrier season were presented to the winners, ine _ chair was occupied by the vicepresident (Mr C. W. Clark), who apolo,giaed for the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr E. L. Macassey). Amongst those present was the Minister of Public Works (Mr.W. B. Taverner), who was accorded a very hearty-welcome. Mr Taverner, who. found' practically a ", the last minute that he was able to attend, said .he was delighted to participate in .such. a gathering. He congratulated .the Caversham members on their excellent performances. during the season, stating that the occasion was unique, inasmuch as every teams’ race. was won ®y, that club. He mentioned that, he had had the pleasure of meeting the Otago team in Wellington, and : showing them over Parliament House, He thought they were a fine lot of athletes, and was not surprised when he learned that they had been successful in the New Zealand Cross-country' Championship! The qualities which made a good harrier were. alsp prominent in making a good man in any- walk of life; The very best thing that a man could have said to him in the course of his life Was that, he was a good sport. He had' special pleasure m presenting the Taverner Cup, awarded for the Junior Gross-country Championship. Last yeftr if -was won by Mornington, and this year by Caversham. In conclusion, Mr Taverner expressed the hope > that the Caversham Club would not bo like Alexander the Great, who sat down and wept when he could find no more worlds to conquer.The prize-winners were as follows: Edmond Cup Steeplechase:—J.
