CHESS.

OTAGO v. OAMARU. A team of players from the Oamaru Chess Club travelled to Dunedin on,Saturday to play a diatch with the Otago Chess Club. The Oamaru Club was somewhat unfortunate in that a large proportion of its best players were unable to make the trip, but their representatives made a better showing than the scores would indicate against the stronger club. At the conclusion of the match supper vrjia . served in the clubroom, when the president (Dr Geoffrey Barnett) expressed the pleasure that the members of the Otago Club had experienced in receiving a friendly visit from the members of the Oamaru Club. Although for many years the Otago Club had paid frequent visits to Oamaru, this was the first occasion for. nine years that. the visits had been reciprocated. These visits helped to cement the friendship that had always existed between the Otago and Oamaru Clubs, and he hoped that they would always continue. The health of the visiting members of the Oamaru Club was drunlc with enthusiasm. The president of the Oamaru Club (Dr Stubbs), in a happy speech, expressed his thanks to the members of the Otago Club for their hospitality, and hoped that on the Otago Club’s return visit to Oamaru his club would make a better showing. During the evening it was mentioned that the first match between Otago and Oamaru Clubs was played at Palmerston 35 years ago, and two of the players who took part in the match on that occasion also played on Saturday evening. The following are the results of the match:—
