CITY POLICE COURT.
Monday, August 11. . (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. James Blair Campbell, charged with -drunkenness as a result of drinking methylated spirits, was remanded lor one week for medical treatment. UNLAWFULLY ON PREMISES. Robert Millar was charged with being found by night without lawful excuse in a yard of the Medical School.—Senior Sergeant Quarter main said that the man had been , found in the Medical School yard under suspicious circumstances. He had already given three false names to the police, who had recorded his finger prints.—The accused had nothing to say for himself.—The magistrate agreed to a remand until August 13. CHARGE OP FORTUNE-TELLING. Emily Prudent Callander was charged with fortune-telling on August 2.—Mr J. B. Thomson, who appeared for the defendant, asked for a remand till Friday, August 15.—Chief Detective Cameron raised no objection, and the remand was granted. SEQUEL ,TO HARBOUR COLLISION. Thomas Louts Waugh was charged that, being the master of the Vera, a steam vessel of not fewer than 40 tons, he did fail to carry in the forefront of the vessel, or in the front of the funnel where it could be seen, and at a height above the. gunwale of not less than nine feet, a bright white light. The defendant was charged plao with failing to comply with the collision regulations in that he carried or exhibited- an ordinary dray dash lantern on the deckhouse of the vessel. —Mr W. D. Taylor prosecuted, and Mr G. J. L. White, with Mr O. J. Cooke, appeared for. the defendant.— ; Evidence was given by Captain Robert Fraser as to the lights carried by defendant’s vessel.—Captain William F. C. Clark, surveyor of. ships, gave evidence regarding an interview he had had with the defendant after the vessels returned to Port Chalmers. He said the defendant bad told them that his mast head light had beeii broken a . few days previously. .Witness added that_the lantern which the defendant produced would not show up ' satisfactorily.—Mr White stated that the case hinged on the interpretation. of the regulations.. The Crown commenced'its proceedings by . issuing a summons on a charge that no mast/ head light was .carried; but then it was apparently thought that this charge would be difficult to prove, and three other charges with reference to the 1 ship’s lights were preferred.—After evidence had been given for the defence, the magistrate reserved his decision. . , MAINTENANCE. The case in which Hubert Kennedy was proceeded against by his wife for separation and maintenance on the grounds of persistent cruelty and failure to maintain was adjourned till Thursday after some evidence had been taken,—Mr .T. O'Shea appeared for the complainant, and Mr 6., M. Lloyd for the defendant.
