LIFE INSURANCE TAXATION.
TO THE EDITOB. SlB,-r-Befemng to the prticle on lifa insurance taxation appearing in your issue of August 1, I desire, in the'interests of my department, to make it clear that it iB paying more jn land and income tax to the New Zealand Government than any other life insurance institution, and, on the basia suggested in the- article, would probably continue,to pay more, J take thia actjpn in order to rempye any erroneous impression that the Government l/ife Insurance Department is receiving better treatment than Us competitors. As regards the statement that "it is now recognised that interest is the only 'fair basis of income tax,'' perhaps I may be excused if I pay iha.fc very few,, if any, of the leading authpritips agree ; wjth this statement; in' fact, the weight of opinion is that, if life insurance offices are to be taxed at nil, there are more equitable methods of taxation.—l am, etc., A.
